Three Renaissance Carols

The Renaissance period of music was filled with stunning pieces that are rarely heard today. The Christmas music of that era is characterized by beautiful modal melodies and fascinating, driving rhythms that can sometimes be wonderfully syncopated. “Three Renaissance Carols” brings together three magnificent carols, skillfully arranged for brass quartet (2 trumpets in B♭, 2 trombones, and an alternate horn part that may be used as a substitute for trombone 1).
The collection starts with the Latin carol “Gaudete,” which features droning reminiscent of bagpipes, and evokes the sounds of Renaissance instruments like the crumhorn and shawm. Next is “Ríu Ríu Chíu,” a contrapuntal Spanish carol that gained popularity when the Monkees performed it on their 1967 Christmas episode. The piece concludes with the energetic and syncopated Spanish carol “E la don, don,” providing a rousing finale.
