Goin’ Home for Voice, Horn in F, Piano

At the 1893 world premiere of Antonin Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony in Carnegie Hall, the audience was deeply moved by the Largo movement. While some speculated that the melody was quoted from an African-American spiritual, Dvořák himself credited his inspiration to spirituals introduced to him by African-American composer Harry Burleigh. Nearly three decades later in 1922, Dvořák’s student William Arms Fisher adapted the Largo melody with new lyrics, transforming it into the beloved song “Goin’ Home.”
 
This arrangement features a solo horn, providing a touching and somber countermelody. It was created to honor those affected by the tragic Southern California fires of 2025. The enduring sentiment of this song serves as both a heartfelt memorial for lives lost and a hopeful anthem for those beginning the journey of rebuilding their homes and lives.
