Description

Few hymn tunes are as popular and moving as “Amazing Grace.” This timeless melody known as “New Britain” was adapted in 1835 to include the inspiring words written by John Newton in 1772. This arrangement holds personal significance, as it was written when my father was very ill—it was his favorite song, especially near the end of his life.
The piece starts quietly with an introduction that gradually builds with brass fanfares and woodwind flourishes, emulating both the calm and struggles of youth. The somber mood continues as sustained drones support the iconic melody, echoing in the distance and symbolizing the complex journey of finding one’s path in life. A flowing, calm chromatic section represents a joyous period, which then abruptly shifts to a tumultuous descent. This resolves into a quiet and peaceful conclusion, reflecting ultimate resolution and acceptance.
