Description

The music to the “Ukrainian National Anthem” was written in 1864 by Mykhalio Verbytsky with lyrics by Pavlo Chubynsky. It is also known as “Shche Ne Vmerla Ukrany” which means “Ukraine has not yet perished.”

During the Soviet era, the “Ukrainian National Anthem” was banned and a Soviet-approved anthem was used until the fall of the Iron Curtain. Once Ukraine achieved its independence in 1992, the music of the original anthem was immediately adopted by its parliament, and revised lyrics were added in 2003.

After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian National Anthem was performed internationally at concerts and many other public events in support of the Ukrainian people.

This arrangement for woodwind quintet uses the traditional harmonies of the anthem making it perfect to accompany singers. After a brief introduction, the anthem starts boldly and is then varied to feature different colors of the instruments. The flowing inner lines of the music provide interesting parts for every player, and is perfect to use in concerts or recitals.
